What is good to help with dry skin on a dog?

I have a part Shitzu and her skin is so dry and flaky, it makes her itch really bad. I have to keep her hair shaved because it gets worse when I let it grow out. Is there something foodwise or medicine wise I can give her to help this?

My sisters friend's dog was like that, and I believe the dog is a shitzu too! Well, I would recommend that you get some oatmeal dog shampoo and bathe your dog once every month, or once every three weeks. Bathing your dog too much can lead to a bad coat on your dog. Here are some good link that I have found for you:

Here is the link for the oatmeal shampoo that I was talking about above:

First, I'd make sure she is eating a grain free dog food. Grains can cause all kinds of skin issues, allergies, etc.

I'd recommend:

Then, if you still have skin issues. You can get salmon oil for the Omega 3's. It helps skin and coat issues. I recommend either Kronch or Timberwolf Organics brands. You can get the Kronch at www.sitstay.com

Good luck.

Fish oil is great for the skin. It also has omega 3 fatty acids that are good for the heart and other organ function.

Here is a really high quality fish oil that is a great deal and they ship for free

It is really great quality and you will pay half as much for this as you would in the pet supply stores.

The dry skin is most likely caused by too much bathing with human shampoo.

What you need to do is get special moisturizing shampoo made for dogs and give her a bath with it. Then if you want to take it a little further, olive oil gives pets soft healthy coats.

Good luck :]

The dry skin is probably a result of the itch, and the cause is food or inhalant allergies. Talk to your vet about a trial of antihistamine therapy (benedryl or claritin) and regular hypoallergenic baths. If the source of the allergy is in the environment, this will clear up the dry skin (omega-3 fatty acid supplements also help). If antihistamines, regular bathing, and dietary supplements do not help the allergies, then you will need to turn your attention to possible food sources.

It is very important that you coordinate your efforts with your vet, they can help you decipher symptoms, and keep track of allergens to consider or eliminate.

A third choice is a simple blood test. It is costly, usually runs about $400, but in a week or so you will have guaranteed laboratory results for the allergy panel of your choice. You can have common food ingredients, extended food ingredients, common plants in your area, and common molds included in the least, and an exact degree to which your dog is allergic to them. If you want a fast, completely accurate and straight forward answer, that is the way to go. Otherwise, the process of elimination is your best friend.
