My cat sheds an insane amount of hair, despite repeated brushings. How can I get him to shed less? P

He's an indoor cat, declawed, about 4 years old and spayed. The shedding is year around and is way beyond any other dog or cat I have ever owned. It is unbelievable. Someone please help me.

The better the diet you feed your cat, the better the quality his coat will be. Cats that aren't nourished properly shed constantly because their hair dies and falls out. Their skin can't support continuous growth. IF you switch your cat to a better diet, your cat will shed less, poop less, smell better, live longer, and have more energy and muscle tone. Not to mention a lot less health problems when it gets older.

An excellent way to go is feeding raw food.

Problem is, a lot of cats raised on dry food won't want to switch to a raw meat diet, even though it is the healthiest for them. So the next best thing is a high quality dry food. I highly HIGHLY recommend Timberwoflf Organics. Their cat formula is called Serengeti. You can order it through their website. Try it, and you should really start seeing results in about 6-8 weeks. http://www.timberwolforganics.com/

It takes about that long for all the toxins to leave their system from eating poor quality, chemical filled foods like Iams, Friskies, etc.

To get even better results, try adding a little bit of fresh salmon oil on top of their dry food. It'll improve their coats and minds even more. You can order it on the Timberwolf website too.

Good luck!

If your brave you could try and bathe him. :)

My cat died at 15, but was declawed and indoors her whole life. I brushed her daily, and still there was cat hair.

I thought this was normal for a cat. If you don't agree, I think a chat with your vet is in order.

Good Luck, I'd be interested in knowing if this was abnormal!

you know pets shed hair due to climate changes, but if the shedding is driving you insane, it has soemthing to do with the shampoo you use on it, or the food you give. ask your vet about this.

Cats sometimes shed a lot under stress. If there is another pet bothering it, try to keep them away from each other.

This is the shedding time of year anyhow. Sure you can try as peekaboo said and bath him, and there is a technique to bathing cats. But what would it benefit you? The loose hair on the cat presently would be washed away, but it will start all over again.

You say that you brush the cat, how often?

Do a complete body brush much more often. If you are doing it weekly then change it to twice or three times a week.

You know what is wrong, how to prevent it. Now it's up to you to do it.

Are you feeding him a high quality food? Make sure his food doesn't have corn products and is mostly meat, veggies, etc.

At this time of year, some of the shedding is okay... just getting ready for warmer weather. But if it's extreme, I would change his diet, ask a vet to check for health problems or if he's a long-haired cat, take him to a groomer and have his coat cut short, except for his mane and tail. I think it's called a lion cut.

When you say an "insane" amount of hair...it makes me worry. Has your cat been vaccinated for Feline Leukemia? Hair loss is a sign of this. If your cat hasn't shed this amount of hair in the past, take it to the vet immediately for a blood test.

Before my days of experience with animals, other than just on the farm, I lost a cat to FeLeu...terrible disease. It can be slowed down, though there is no cure.

Not trying to scare you, but if you have other cats, it can be spread by saliva (bites, etc). You will want to have them tested if this one turns up positive, and get their vaccinations asap.

Otherwise, try using a latex glove to groom your cat once a day (just like you're petting him). This will remove most loose hair, and you can just toss it in the trash.

Good luck, sugar!
