Any dog will shed, but boxers are indeed a short-haired dog. See an allergy specialist before getting any dog to seek their advice and if you really want to experience it for yourself, contact your local Boxer rescue. Offer to foster a Boxer for awhile so you can get used to their behavior and their effect on your allergies. Good luck and good choice!

Do you mean allergies to humans or allergies for the dogs? We have a boxer who is a big teddy bear. He is allergic to a bunch of things and we have had him on predinsone for most of his life. It keeps the itching down, but makes him eat and drink more and in turn have to go the bathroom more often. As far as if boxers are allergic to humans, that would depend on the person. I am allergic to cats, but am fine sharing my pillow with my dog, who weighs 73lbs and thinks he is a lap dog. Hope that helps

Boxers arent the worst shedders but they do have a undercoat so they will have dander and some shedding.

If anything go with a poodle or poodle mix because poodles are hypoallergenic. also bichons, shih tzus, and lhasa apsos are hypoallergenic.

No better than any other dog. Boxers shed and have dander, so they can trigger allergies. Coat length doesn't make much difference, it's the dander in their skin.

Non-shedding breeds like poodles, shih tzus and bichons are less likely to trigger allergies (but no guarantees on these breeds either).

Is a Boxer good for allergies?

Not really. Short haired dogs actually shed moderately, the length has nothing to do with shedding, it's the TYPE of hair. Also, short haired dogs often get a lot of dander, which is also bad for allergies. I would suggest you not try this, it would be bad for the puppy if you had to give him back because your allergies were too bad.

Dogs that are generally better for allergy sufferers: poodles, bichons, shih-tzus, lhasa apsos, yorkies, silkies.

No dog is 'hypoallergenic'. I know people who are allergic even to poodles and bichons which have a very LOW rate of allergies, but are NOT hypoallergenic. Allergies are caused by hair, dander, and saliva, and all breeds have all 3.

We have a boxer. He is the best dog we have ever had. Boxers usually have very sweet temperments and are wonderful with kids. They are also very smart and easy to train. But they do shed a lot. Probably the only drawback.

That depends entirely on what your family members are allergic to- often times it's not the fur itself, it can be the dander or any number of other things.

If your family is interested in getting a dog, the people who are allergic should go and talk to their allergist. The allergist can properly inform them of how allergic they are and what options they have available.

I was allergic to my husband's cat, but very mildly, and my route of treatment was both managable and reasonable.

Getting a dog is a huge decision and all the members of your family need to be 100% sold on the idea and the work involved.
