Anyone have a suggestion about what to do about dry skin on a dog?

I have a 5 year old Lab/Newfie mix, he has long hair like a newfie and it is really dry and flaky? I tried giving him olive oil in his food and that did nothing! He eats pedigree weight maintanance because he was really over weight when I got him from the pound (125 pounds then now he is a healthy 95). I know it is probably his food that is doing this to his fur but he won't eat anything else.! Anyone have any other ideas for me! He is black and my husband jokingly said to wash him with head and shoulders, but I am begining to wonder if that might not be a bad idea!

you can use fish oil pill. it help with multiple symptom but kinda makes the dog a little gasy. but it work also use the simplest head n shoulders shampoo. it help the skin but ist too harsh to damage. Also ask you vet if the dog may be allergic to any thing in the food your feeding it, sometimes an ingredient may cause the skin to get that dry.. My parents have a 150lb. rott w/ same condition he is allergicto something in regular dog food, so now they feed him human food made especially for him w/ the pills and vitamins...plus HnS.

Use oatmeal shampoo and really try to get him on a better food. The grocery store food all have corn and by products. Corn is one of the main causes of skin problems. Pinnical, Canidea, Wellness, Innova, Natural Balance. these are just few good one. Also try Salmon oil on then food way better the Olive oil!! Or Vitiam E oil! The salmon oil is the best though. You could also try Solid Gold Mineral supplements for skin issues. Good luck

Don't use human shampoo, the pH levels are different and will make it worse. You can add Dinovite to his food, it'll help with skin and coat problems. You could also try shampoo with oatmeal in it.

Pedigree is not a good food! That could be what is causing the dry skin. Talk to your vet about a better brand.

Also, if you live in a dry climate, that could be causing it as well. Winter is rough on their skin too, not just people's.

Over-bathing will also cause dry skin. Your dog should not need a bath more than twice a year, unless he gets into mud or something.

all lite pet foods do that (cat and dog, all brands) lite food lacks essential fatty acids (for obvious reasons). Add omega 3 to the diet along with oatmeal baths (or go to the groomers for a special dry skin bath). Omega three can be found in gel supplement form, chewable vitamins, and in treats. PetSmart sells omega 3 treats in many flavors. I used the gel for my cat that is on light food and it really works well. But if the dry skin is really bad i would do one trip to the groomers to help get the skin in condition since the omega three may take a few weeks to show. my dog loves the omega 3 treats. good luck!

I actually know someone who used Head %26amp; Shoulders on her dog and it really worked to clear up her flaky skin. It didn't harm the dog at all.

My Vet recommended 1 teaspoonful of Evening Primrose a day for one of my pups who had dandruff. I used to mix it in with her morning feed and the dandruff cleared up with a couple of weeks. I still give it to all my dogs because it helps to keep their skin supple and clear from dandruff.
