Have a rat terrier puppy.....he willl not house train...HELP...pulling out hair?
HI, Have you taken him out every half hour to an hour. I have 2 rat terriers one we got when he was 8weeks old we had him housebroken in a few weeks. It takes time and patience. Right after he plays a little or drinks. I would cut water out at a certain time before bed time too. He will catch on eventually praise him to if he does go outside, Yes they can be stubborn at times but they are very smart dogs he'll get it just have patience.

If he閳ユ獨 only 3 months old, then I閳ユ獡 not that surprised he isn閳ユ獩 house trained yet. It閳ユ獨 not really that unusual. Some dogs get it within days, others take months. It just takes some dogs longer than others.
If you haven閳ユ獩 already, try giving a treat (in addition to praise) when he goes in the right place. You must give it to him the moment he's finished. If you don't already stand with him outside, start doing that. Use your "potty command" repeatedly until he goes, and then give the treat and praise. The treat was the final push that helped my dog finally get the right idea.

Sorry to say, but terriers can be very honory and stubborn. Unfortunately it can take up to a year before a dog is fully house broken and even then it still may have accidents. Just keep up a routine and that might help.

I have a Jack Russell Terrier and she took a while to house train. She also just had puppies 6 weeks ago and this is what I've learned:
1. First of all, I'm sure you already know that when they do go potty outside you praise the hell out of them. Tell them "Good Girl!! You went potty outside!!"
2. When they do go in the house, and you catch them going (If you don't punish immediately they wont understand why they are being scolded) you tell them no, and put them outside.
3. With the puppies I've learned that they need to pee/poop right after a nap. So when your puppy wakes up from a nap, take them out immediately, and of course praise like crazy and give lots of kisses.
4. Puppies also have small bladders. Think about all the times a day you go to the bathroom. Well they need to go even more. Walk your dog every couple hours. If they don't have a chance to go outside, how do you expect them to go?
5. Lastly, if you aren't home, make sure to leave a safe place for him/her to go. Put out a newspaper or potty pad and praise when they go there too. It should help save your carpet!

You need to take him out every hour and after he eats and drinks. Puppies can't hold it like adults. You should have been prepared for this before you got the puppy. Puppies poop and pee everywhere because they don't know any better. Just take him outside every hour and after he eats and drinks.

First off, he is a puppy, so cut him some slack, please. If he really is "walking on thin ice" maybe you should call a rat terrier rescue group and find a home for him that will be more patient and willing to be in it for the long haul. If you are willing to continue with this responsibility you chose to bring into your life, begin crate training him. There are tons of books and websites on how to do this. The most important thing you can do while you are crate training him is to be consistant, but patient, too. I really hope you decide to cut the little guy some slack and begin crate training hime with love and understanding. Remember, he is a baby, and he doesn't speak human. So be patient!

100% effective- you need to leave the puppy outside for 2 weeks, day and night so he can establish the "bathroom place". This will retrain his thought process. I have tried the kennel training and everything else possible, but this one will work. You must be serious about it or it won't work.

get a kennel for your dog and keep him in that. take him out for play but remember to take him outside every 15 minutes because puppies get excited when playing. watch for circling and also when the puppy eats and drinks take him out and wait for him/her to go. and praise him. but keep the puppy in the kennel most the time when you can not keep a constant eye on them. this should work with persistantcy. puppies may cry a lot in a kennel at first but will get use to it. never let your puppy out due to crying or barking or your puppy will think thats the way to get out. latter they will learn the kennel is there safe resting spot.

Okay, housetraining can definitely be a HUGE frustration. This is especially true when the breed you have chosen can tend to be a little stubborn.
First and foremost remember he is only 12 weeks old. Each animal is going to be different in how long it takes to potty train. Essentially he is an infant, so like humans, he is still very young. You wouldn't expect a 6month old human to be potty trained, so it's hard to expect that out of a puppy at 12 wks.
Use potty pads in the house, take out every hour on the hour, kennel when you are not around and use lots and lots of praise when they go to their potty pads or go outside successfully. As they get used to going outside or in a specific area you can gradually train them to warn you of when it is time. It will take time and yes there will be messes, but stick with it, it will get better with a LOT of diligence. Also don't physically punish, that could make them shy, aggressive etc and could also cause them to be a submissive urinator (which is definitely something you do NOT want). Good luck!

my puppy, who will be one next month, was very similar to this.. some puppys just take longer to potty train it could even be a few more months.. at 3 months your asking a little much to have them finsihed. another idea for potty training is to put a bell next to your door where you take your puupy out and have him/her ring it with the paw and that will indicate that you are taking them outside. it clicks with some dogs and works rather well. They will know that ringing the bell means potty time and they can train you when to come to the door,,,lol
