Pomeranian or not?

We bought a pomeranian last night from a collge student who swears that it is a pure bred, but a few people have now met the dog and they say he isnt. They dont htink he is a pure bred because his fur doesn't stick up all over and they say he looks too long. They do not own this type of dog, so I don't know why they feel that they are experts. Anyway, when I went online to look at photos, he looks like a few of the photos but most of the images did have dogs whose hair stood up all over. We are going to the vet today but they do not do a DNA test or anything. Can anyone tell me what signs to look for that stand out in this type of dog? He was 400 dollars and I dont want to be ripped off. ALSO- he humps EVERYTHING is there a way to break a dog of this habit? He is driving our pug crazy!!!

Pomeranian or not?

hey - have a pom, so ill try helpout.

firstly, your vet WILL be able to tell you if its a real pom. or i can help out if you post a good pic.

btw, how old is it? poms go through a stage called "puppy uglies" between 4-10months when they puppy fur changes into an adult coat and they look scraggly and ugly. and look more like chihuahuas!lol their final coat will probably be in by 14 months id say. so if hes younger than this, dont worry.

also, the pics youve been looking at online are more than likely show dogs. so if you'd got a show dog for 400 then wow.lol but 400 isnt a bad price. i live in uk, and my puppy was 鎷?00 (which is standard here)

groom your pom backwards - from tail to head and feet upwards. see if his fur sticks out now! :-) dont worry okay im sure your dogs lovely. post a pic and ill try my best.

as for humping... well usually id say neuter him. but a small pom is quite delicate and i wouldnt take the risk under anaesthetic providing your pugs a boy. get a water spray bottle (my pom actually likes this :-|) and when he does it, spray him or make a horrible loud noise that he hates - and take your pug away. perhaps a horn. he will soon associate humping = horrible noise + water in my face + pug gets taken away :-(

P.S i dont mean to scare you but AKC doesnt count for sh*t. excuse my language but it really doesnt. ive heard of people in the past that register dogs with AKC and theyre not purebred. the AKC doesnt come round to inspect what is being registered - it could be anything.

Pomeranian or not?

There is no real way to tell.

If all you are worried about is whether he is pure bred or not - are you going to rid of him if he's not?

Pomeranian or not?

Well you bought him from soem random college student, so there you go. Look on the AKC website for breed standard.

As for the humping- if he isn't neutered already, get him fixed! Otherwise, he's a new dog and the mounting is a dominance behavior. A water bottle spritz will help curb it.

Get him fixed.

And I hope, really hope, that regardless if the new pup is a pure Pom or not, you will honor the promise you made to him when you brought him into your home to keep and love him for life.

Pomeranian or not?

Does it really matter? He's yours now.

Is he neutered? If not, he should be, it'll help with the humping.

Pomeranian or not?

I've had many pomeranians. A standard pom usually has shorter hair that isn't so wild, and they'r larger, sometimes as big as a cokcer spaniel. That's likely what you have. A miniature pom is basically a big ball of fur, a round puff. A min pom is probably what those people are thinking of when they think of poms.

Pomeranian or not?

I have a Pomeranian mix and she does not look much like a Pom anymore now that she is older. Perhaps you have a mixed breed. I have seen some Poms that are not as "Puffy" as others. Either way, you should love the little guy.

Has he been neutered? If not, that may be why he is humping.

Pomeranian or not?

Who cares if he is a pure bred? what are you going to do if he's not? Give him away? Throw him out on the street? If he didn't come with papers, chances are he is not a pure bred.

And a way to break the humping habit...GET HIM NUTERED!! There are enough dogs in the pound already who just want to be loved.

Pomeranian or not?

I thought mine was mixed when I got him but come to find out he wasnt...I took him to the dog park %26amp; asked people who knew more about dogs than me.They all have different looks it was another person with a pomeranian but it had a shorter nose %26amp; body %26amp; he wasnt as playful as mine.

Pomeranian or not?

He could be a poor example of the breed, could just have bad hair, or he could be a mix. There isn't a way to know for sure. There is some breed DNA testing available, but Pomeranians aren't one of them yet. Is he registered with AKC? If so, that would help prove that he is. As far as the humping, is he neutered? Neutering will help, some of the humping can be dominance too. Just reminding the Pug that he is in the house and not to be ignored. He may also need more exercise and some obedience to get his energy level under control.

Pomeranian or not?

If the dog is purebred then it has American Kennel Club documents, or maybe CKC papers if it was whelped in Canada. Whenever a purebred dog is sold it is the obligation of the seller to transfer those papers to the new owner. If a dog does not have genuine AKC papers, or pedigree documents from another registry authority (such as the NGA in the case of greyhounds) then it isn't considered a purebred dog. It doesn't matter what the owner says is true or believes is true about the lineage of his dog - no papers, no purebred - end of story.

Did you get the papers? If not then demand them at once. If there are no papers then the dog is not a Pomeranian no matter what the previous owner says.

The best way to break the humping habit is to neuter the dog ASAP. If he has no papers then you don't want him intact anyway. Be a responsible, ethical owner. Spay or neuter always unless the animal is a top notch example of its breed and you have homes lined up for the pups ahead of time. Don't breed for the "fun" of it or because you like puppies. Every day thousands of unwanted pups are killed, and unethical dog owners are to blame.
