I have a 7 yr old Shitzu. I've had him since he was a pup. He's an inside pet. The problem is he's always itching even as a puppy. I've taken him to the vet and they told me he has allergies gave me a few hydrocortizone pills and he continues to itch. He does not have flees or ticks. I've tried letting he's hair grow long that didn't help so I tried keeping it short, but he still itchs. I've tried oatmeal baths different sprays for itching. Still he continues. I tried bathing him weekly, didn't help. Then once a month no change. We've tried the groomers numerous times over the years and he still itches. I just don't know what to do.

A lot of skin problems with dogs are food related. Most would say that wheat and corn are the top causes of dog skin problems. Switch him over to a real good dog food. Foods that contain a lot of corn, wheat, soy, by products, or artificial chemicals aren't the best. Dogs should eat meat primarily. I have a bull terrier which is a breed that is notorious for having skin problems and mine hasnt had any. I feed him only Canidae All Life Stages brand dog food. its like 30 dollars for a 20 lb bag but you feed less compared to other foods like purina or kibbles and bits or w/e. Another food i would recommend is Innova EVO. I believe its all meat or almost all meat based. But that has to be ordered online unless you are really lucky to have a pet store near by that has it. Salmon or sardine oil on the food will help also but only if you have a good food foundation.

My Chihuahua had this .. I used to bath him with creme bath, anything very moisturizing like olay and when he was wet I'd rub him down with lotion, nothing scented but good lotion. It helped.

Stop bathing your dog so much. Shih tzus do not need bathing more than every other month at the very most. My dogs get a bath once or twice a year tops. Also, what are you feeding? Many dogs have allergies to grain heavy foods like Purina, Science Diet, Iams, Eukanuba, Pedigree, etc. Find a food with no corn, wheat, soy, sorghum, brewers yeast (another common allergen), beet pulp (a filler), etc. Good foods to try are Canidae, Chicken Soup, Merrick, Innova EVO, some of the Wellness and Solid Gold, etc. An appropriate raw diet is also very good. Supplement your dog's daily food with fish oil capsules. Dogs love the taste of the oil. One capsule once a day is probably fine for a Shih Tzu sized dog. Also add about 100-200 IUE of vitamin E supplement, raw egg, and olive oil.

scrub him better during his bath and dont do it weekly. that may cause him to have dry skin i guess. i have a boxer, and she itches a lot. but give him/her a bath every two weeks. and um it might be the heat or the coolness inside or outside. thats what happens to my dog. so just basically scrub in his fur A LOT better. maybe that will help. sorry if this doesnt work but this is all i know to help you..

Most dog allergies are caused by grain based diets. If the food you are feeding has corn/wheat/barley/rice/beet pulp/etc... Then you need to re-think the diet. Dogs are carnivores. They need meat. Would you feed a horse meat? Then why would you feed a dog grain?
