I took a quiz on that and the dogs that they told me I should get are dogs that I would never ever want to own. So please don't take the results as gospel.
Visit your local shelter and play with the dogs/cats that you are interested in. However, dogs and cats are very very different from one another so your first task is to figure out which one you want!
Cats: can leave for days alone as long as they have food/litter box.
Dogs: you need to be home to give them attention/exercise. They can't be left alone overnight unless they have access to outdoors, but it still isn't good for them as they are pack animals.
If you travel/go out of town a lot, a cat would be better. If you have time every day to devote to a dog, walking them, playing and so on, then owning a dog is possible. Think about how much time you will be spending with them - do y ou have a yard, is it fenced, how much do you work - how often are you home?
Every dog, regardless of breed, should be walked a minimum of 30 minutes a day. If you don't have this time, then get a cat.
Again, visit the shelter, interact with the animals. Play with them, go back the next day, visit the same animals that you were interested in and a few more. Go back the next day and do the same. And then make your choice!

If you search on Google for dog breed quiz or dog breed selector they give you pages of results so there are plenty to choose from but keep in mind that some of them tell you what type dog you would most likely be.
