What is the best and safest month to shave your dog for summer? MI resident?
I start cutting hair in April. The hair hanging along her butt goes first. In late May or early June I cut all the hair that has undergrowth. I don't have to shave her (her back coat doesn't have much undergrowth), but I keep her trimmed and brushed regularly all summer. I am so glad you do that. I had heard that dogs shouldn't be cut because their hair doesn't grow back in the same. Nonsense. My last dog had a very thick coat, and because of what I was told, I didn't cut her hair. Finally, one summer it was so hot, I shaved her down. It was like she was six months old again. I would never let a hairy dog go through a summer without a hair cut.

Exactly,my dog hangs in the house or in the shade on hot days. When it cools down she rolls around in the grass-all fours in the air and a big smile on her face. I think dogs like to get rid of all the old hair and undergrowth. When it grows back it is fresh, new and healthy.Hug your pup for me! Report It

I have a poodle and live in the UP and I get her shaved in May. Then, by fall, she has a good winter base coat and just a trim is required.

Depends what kind of dog you have. Generally speaking, a dogs coat protects it from the cold and the heat. It's coat is designed to trap air that will help keep it cool. Removing a dogs coat can actually lead to sun stroke and hotspots as the dog has no protection from the sun. I would ask at a reputable groomer that knows how to handle your dogs coat properly - unfortunately many breeders are "sheep-shearers" and will clip anything with a coat. Good Luck
