I have already made an appointment with her vet, but meanwhile, my older collie-chow (9) is driving herself crazy itching. She's always been a licker and zeroes in on a specific spot on her hip. I have had the vet check that spot every time I take her. This week she has most of the hair chewed off in about a silver-dollar sized spot. I just bathed her and searched her good, no fleas, no dandruff, just a couple of places that she usually licks are pretty irritated. Any suggestions for making her more comfy for a couple days til her appointment?

You can use an otc product like cortaid, and it wouldn't hurt to use an antibiotic ointment too. Just be sure to keep her from licking it right off-- the small amount you are going to use won't hurt her, but it won't help her skin if she licks it off immediately. Discourage her from licking and chewing whenever you can, with an e collar if needed. You can also give her some benadryl (1 mg per pound twice daily, so probably two 25 mg tablets twice daily for a dog her size). It doesn't help all dogs, but it does help some of them. Good Luck!!
