My cat Mya has always been excessively grooming herself since I moved (the beginning of Nov.). She has started plucking out the fur along the base of her tail and on her sides, while licking. She also has been so obsessed with grooming, that if she can't lick herself, she'll lick my dogs, or even me. What can I do to help her end this obsession and self mutilation? She's beginning to make wounds on herself and I don't want her getting making any more sores on her body.
Please help! Why is my cat losing her hair??
What you are describing sounds like 'fur mowing', especially the part that she is plucking her fur. Kitties will groom themselves bald.
Fur mowing is usually a stress reaction. Mya's obsession with grooming is probably from moving to the new residence. But it can also be from allergies or parasites.
Please make an appointment for her with her vet to be certain there is not a medical problem. If it is stress, the vet can recommend an anti-anxiety medication for Mya.
Answers won't let me post this as a link. This site is a vet that has wonderful detail information on alot of illnesses and conditions. Go to marvistavet com, chose 'The Pet Web Library', scroll down to 'Fur-Mowing (Feline)'.
Purrs to you and Mya.
Edit: I did get these links to post below.

Sounds like it is caused by stress... sometimes they need medication in order to stop (which you would have to get from your vet). Sometimes putting on an elizabethan collar will help stop the licking, but sometimes it isn't enough.
Other things to make sure of are that she doesn't have fleas or other problems with the skin.

My cat also was losing his hair on his back near his tail. He also groomed there obsessively. At that time he was under a lot of stress; we had introduced a new kitten to the house. We assumed it was stress. Sure enough, after a couple of months of living with the new kitten, he got better. His hair has slowly grown back and he dosen't groom there as much. Your recent move may be causing stress on her. Give it some time and see if it gets better. If not, then take her to your vet. Good luck.
Also, cats naturally like to groom. My older cats are always licking the kitten. They do it even when they seem irritated by it. They growl and groom him at the same time, it's quite funny.

She may have a skin infection and if this is the case rush her to the vets as soon as possible so she can get this treated! Also, she could be stressed because of the move and in this case I would take her to the vet also to see what they would recommend. Good luck!
